Choosing Online Survey Software – Survey Gizmo

I often get asked by business owners and entrepreneurs, “What is the best online survey software?”  There are hundreds of different software types out there, and I have tried quite a few of them.  In my opinion Survey Gizmo is the best value package; even their free package is better than any other tool.   This will post outline the reasons I use Survey Gizmo.

Let’s start by comparing the free package options.    If you are just starting out in business, and don’t have a lot of capital, you may want to start by doing a quick and easy poll to see who might be interested in your new business, product or service.   You might just want to put a link on one of the social media sites such as twitter.    You have no need for complicated skipping, you just want to describe you product or service and ask if it appeals or not.

The most commonly used free software option that people use is Survey Monkey.   However, you don’t get much for free, and Survey Monkeys free version restricts you to just 10 survey questions and 100 responses per survey.  Then you can only look at respondents answers online, you cannot download them or export them.

However, Survey Gizmo offers free accounts which allow an unlimited number of surveys and unlimited number of questions.  You can also have 250 responses per month.  The free version of Survey Gizmo also allows you to export your responses to excel for further analysis.

Imagine now that you are ready to do more complicated surveys, for example if you have been in business for a while, and you want to carry out a satisfaction study in which you ask customers who have experienced different products or services different questions. Survey Gizmo has the best advanced features and skip logic.

One time when I was working for a bank, and trying to use Survey Monkey to do an internal staff survey, I found their lack of skip logic very frustrating.   For example, I had a question that read

Q1          “Which of the following teams do you interact with at least once a week?”

IT                                            Answers questions in section A

Loans Approvals               Answers questions in Section B

Legal                                      Answers question in Section C

So if someone has dealings with all three departments it was fine.    But if they only dealt with IT and Legal for example, I could get them to fill out Section A, but Survey Monkey won’t let you then skip Section B which is Loan Approvals, even though the respondent said they don’t deal with them.  Or if someone only deals with IT and Loan Approvals, Survey Monkey does not allow respondents to skip section about Legal.   In other words once you move forward in a questionnaire Survey Monkey does not allow you to back check respondents answers at previous questions to check eligibility.

Survey Gizmo allows you to route your respondents any way you want.  So if respondents only deal with IT and Legal, you can put a simple instruction on the loan approvals section telling the program that if Loan Approvals was not selected at Q1 to skip to the next section.

Another benefit with Survey Gizmo, if you only want to upgrade for a short while you can, and then once your project is finished, you can revert back to a lower version.  No such luck with Survey Monkey you need to see out your year long contract.

As a researcher, I need survey tools which will produce robust reliable data, so I need to go with a sophisticated program, and as I am not a programmer it has to be a simple point and click, as simple as “If respondents do not say “legal” at Q1 skip to next section”.  And Survey Gizmo really is that simple.    After trialing other packages, some of which are even more restrictive than Survey Monkey, my conclusion is that Survey Gizmo is the best value of all the survey software programs.  Even if you don’t need anything complicated, I would still recommend you use Survey Gizmos free version as it has fewer restrictions.  If you think you may want to upgrade to a premium Survey Gizmo option you can try it free for 14 days to be sure.

What about the brand new tool, Eval & GO? Data doesn’t have to be exported to Excel to be analysed, scored and cross-tabulated – it’s all on the drag-and-drop interface! A great free account with unlimited questions, unlimited surveys and 250 responses / month. It also has intuitive skip logic and many more question types. What are your thoughts on it Sara?

Thank you for your comments. Is your software new? I have had a look at the Eval & Go website. It looks like a powerful tool. It also looks like your free version is great and not as restrictive as some.
I am always happy to investigate a new software tool.
